MU-2 Winch reassembly

So I just spent the last week disassembling ,sorting and cleaning two winches I have to get the best parts from the two to make one. I am a little confused. When I removed the large bronze gear it only had two keys attaching it to the main shaft.
I do not understand what keeps it from walking out towards the drum and the keys dragging on the housing bushing. That appears to be what happened to one of the winches as the bushing was pushed into the spacer behind the dog.The bushing was out on the drum side about 3/8" and the two keys at the gear were distorted on the drum side.
