actually, the bronze gear thrusts against the bushings in the housing, and if they are worn (which is normal) it can ride over and or get worn thus exposing the edge of the keys, there should be a thrust washer of 1/4" between the inner housing and the clutch dog that prevents the clutch keys from rubbing, another cause would be the outboard bearing support arm is bent or out of position causing the drum to slide over and end play forming in the dog are, my bet is the inner bushing has worn out and the gear is sliding over, its time for new bushings or a new housing and cover for sae.
