MU-2 winch assembly

Hey guys I am sure this is a stupid question but none the less still a question. I took lots of pics when taking the winch apart but one I cannot find is which way does the big brass gear go in the main shaft? The gears look almost straight cut but is there an easy way to know which side faces the bushing on the cover of the gear case?
Other question is which direction does the input haft rotate when drawing the cable in?
sorry to bother you with stuff like this but any assistance would be appreciated
