Why not have folks on treadmills at gym make power?

As an aside...... people exert energy at gyms to lose weight or for other health benefits. Why not tap into that wasted energy, power the lights or something off of it. I know it's not much, but it is energy. It's what the professor on Gilligan's Island would want..... why can't we figure out a way to use trash or leaves as fuel for power plants, instead of dumping into landfills. The supply of leaves & grass clippings is endless, I know I dig them out of my swimming pool daily.
