I am curious about your setup and how responsive it is? I have found that there are two different situations that are smokey with diesels. My 4bt since the VE pump rebuild is more responsive which is great off road but the turbo doesn't keep up and it puffs black smoke frequently. Once the turbo is making good boost I have never noticed excessive smoke and egt seems to mac around 1100-1200. I was told by the pump builder I still have plenty of room to add fuel and he didn't remove the off boost fuel control as some people do but just set it a little more aggressive. I don't even know what turbo I have but I don't like smoke especially off road with a group and would like to reduce that a bit.
