Not sure about the 251, but I can't imagine the gasket design is much different than the 230. On that engine, the thin side gaskets get glued to the engine block with a specific sealant recommended by gasket manufacturer. The old fashioned way to attach the side gaskets to the engine block is to tie the gaskets to the block with thread through the holes. The front and rear pan gaskets then get fed into their channels formed into the front and rear of the pan with the ends protruding equally at both sides. These extra lengths get compressed straight down as the pan is drawn up into position as the mounting bolts are tightened.
