What we are trying to do is not have a huge spike that will overwhelm the health system - that is what has happened in Italy - they are having to let people die because there is no bed or equipment to help the patient breath.
We are trying to prevent exposure for long enough that a cure can be created.
Calling this another flu is sort of correct except the death rate is higher - now you have 2 viruses to catch and COVID19 can cause lasting damage - we also do not yet know if you can catch it a second third forth or fifth time
The other issue is when will this mutate and it looks like there are 2 viruses - one mild and one that does more damage.
As to the news over reacting I disagree - articles in the Washington Post, NewYork Times, BBC, CBC even CNN are about right.
death rate seems to be about 1 in 120 it is most likely lower than that but we do not know.
One tracked case had 13 people exposed - they all showed symptoms in 24 hrs by weeks end 3 were in ICU one of those is now back home - if those other 2 were not in ICU they would be dead.
We just do not know enough yet but we do know that action needs to be taken to slow down the spread to save lives.
