Jerry, not knowing exactly what model stihl saw you have to be more specific on typical problems, you may need an impulse or fuel line as Mark suggested. Hard starts could accompany this as well. How does it idle, smooth and consistent speed or does it 'hunt'?
Have you pulled the carburetor apart, specifically on the pump side? There is a tiny screen in there that catches the super fines that an aging tank filter will miss.
Have you changed your spark plug? They seem to last so long and are hardly ever the problem for me. Although when I foul them they usually fire on the low end and will miss-fire or run erratic on the high side.
