My dad and his brothers built houses starting in the 1950's through the 1970's. They worked for my grandpa and they did everything. Poured the footers, lay block and brick, stick frame, heating and plumbing, etc.

When the older brothers went out on their own my Dad started teaching carpentry at the county vocational school. He had seniors and every year they would build a house by contract for an owner on their site. Great thing for kids as it was a real world experience for them.

My Dad is soft spoken but knows his stuff and patient so works good for the teaching aspect.

One year they had an inspector come out to do the rough inspection and Dad had already heard stories about him. VERY arrogant and demanding of builders. he walked around and then announced, "Okay kids, gather around. I have something to show you all. This is just an example of why we need to have inspectors oversee home building. You see these stairs? The tread is in the incorrect ratio as their is not enough surface on the step." he said this with a smirky smile while looking right at my Dad. Without skipping a beat, My d dad look at him and said, " Kids, this is exactly why you should always be present when an inspector comes. As you all know, we screwed 3/4" plywood to the kickers on the steps to save wear and tear for the homeowner. When an inspector can't see the obvious, you need to be there to point out his lack of understanding and educate him." The kids all laughed and he stormed out.

Don't mess with Dad.
