Seems to me that another factor is liability laws and workers compensation. At one point companies knowingly put workers in harm's way and exposed them to all sorts of unhealthy conditions. Now the pendulum has swung a bit too far the other way in some cases. I see employers walking on eggshells afraid of injury lawsuits. This fear seems to push companies to coddle workers because even if the employer is right the lawyer fees will will them. This liability fear is often exploited by employees and the ones that work hard end up feeling like they are carrying some of the others and as a result it ruins the good workers. I really think much of the problems were generated within industry and not necessarily an indication of upbringing or willingness to work.
