Most of us grew up with chores to do and we were expected to do them. My parents both worked, and weren't around when I got home from school. But there was always a list of chores....mow the lawn, pull weeds, rake the lawn, clean the patio...etc. A lot of the younger generation have grown up with the TV or with video games to keep them busy while the parents worked. Consequently they have not all learned how to work or that they need to work. I had the benefit of my two sons working with me, but now they are struggling to find any young people who really want to work.
