Most pto winch operation is very basic.
These winches can break things, crush hands, and should be treated with great respect.
Knowing how to use them takes time, sometimes LOTS of time.
The process is (usually) like this:
1. Make sure the clutch on the winch travels freely and easily and is disengaged.
2. Pull out some cable and attach it to an anchor, or something you want to pull. You can also have a friend hold tension on the cable.
3. Start the engine. Find the neutral position in the transfer case.
4. Shift the transmission into Low (1st) gear. Let the clutch out. (the pto should be engaged and turning the winch spool (drum) shaft, but not the spool (drum) itself).
5. Use the winch clutch shifter to engage the spool (drum).
6. As the cable winds in, be ready to shift the transmission into neutral and disengage the winch clutch before the chain comes through the fairleads.
If none of the parts involved shifts freely, or operates correctly, it would be advisable to disassemble and repair.
