It is definitely NOT a Poly 318. I know what a Poly 318 is, having worked on one in my father in laws dump truck.

The casting numbers all show to be an LA engine. The valve covers are rectangular, not scalloped, and are held on with bolts around the perimeter, not through the top of the cover. The combustion chambers are wedge.

In fact, the stamped numbers and casting numbers on the block show it to be post-Poly 318 era.

The P translates to 1979, which is wrong for some reason. It ought to be a D for 1968. The M is for Mound Road. 318R is a 318 meant for regular fuel. the 2376 is the 2,376 day of production. 2164 to 2529 covers 1968. 0140 was the 140th engine assembled that day.

I have not pulled the crank out yet to get its casting number. However, the flashing is very wide, which matches photos in the books showing the difference between a forged steel and a cast iron crank.

The heads have casting numbers of 2843675-20 & 21, which reference to 68-74 318 with 1.78 intake & 1.50 ex, 60cc chambers and non-adj rocker arms.

I think it's a safe bet this is not a Poly 318.
