Although I was thinking of the electric pump only as a short term fix until I located a replacement mechanical pump, clearly I've hit a sore spot...
So after some investigative work, I've located a mechanical unit in Winchester, Va that will be available at 3 pm today. It should be in by this evening, presuming all goes well, thereby maintainung the purity of the era!
Thanks to everyone for the feedback, and especially to "Mike in Fairfax" for the offer of a loaner part. Much appreciated.
With that settled, no one answered if they had ever heard of the practice of blowing into the filler to diagnose a bad fuel pump. Anyone?
