S. Bear, yes I've done that to find out what the problem is. if the engine starts or the sediment bowl fills up with gas it's normally the pump, if it starts and continues to run it could be a check valve in the pump(have had it happen) the gas will run back to the tank after shut down and the pump will not pull it back to the engine with out help (blow in the filler neck) if you can blow in the tank and it will not push gas to the sediment bowl and it holds the pressure, theres an obstruction in the line or tank somewhere. if you blow in the filler and no gas shows up at the sediment bowl and it doesn't hold the pressure then you are out of gas. the pump also will not pull gas if there even the slightest leak in the line.(kinks, rust, old cracked rubber)it will only pull air. breaks in the line on the carb side will become evident very quickly. you have to be careful about how much you pressure you put on the tank, I know where you think this is going but it's not. I was helping a friend of mine once, in the parking lot. his fuel pump had expired and we were trying to get the truck running enough for him to get home. I blew in the tank to prime the pump and put to much pressure on the tank, (he had filled up that morning) when I moved and released the pressure the tank barfed about a gallon of gas back in my face, bad, bad, bad, I was 40 miles from home. rode home in a ty-vec suit in my birthday suit with ALL of my clothes in the bed. by the way, the truck started and he did get home. hope this drivel helps some. Dave.
