O.T. Jeep woes

My son's 1997 Jeep TJ blew its engine. He was driving it and suddenly it started to vibrate, knock and had decreased power. He slowed down and tried to limp home but it then died.
He has always taken good care of it- oil changes, etc, and it had 130k miles.
It was towed to a local shop, and the man called to tell me that the engine was toast. He found coolant in the oil and implied, but did not verify, that the block was cracked in some way.
He said the best repair would be a reman engine. He quoted $1950 for the engine (with a 75 k warranty) and another $1650 or so for labor. In addition he has a little labor and towing costs- from a considerable distance.
My son is 28, gettting married in a few months, and does not have that kind of cash right now.
The Jeep is otherwise in very good shape. In the last 2 years he has spent considerable money on the rear axle, radiator, clutch and has upgraded it in other ways. He does not want to junk it if possible.
What about a used engine, or other suggestions?
Thanks.
