Back up your OPINION with PUBLISHED data re: tire/rim combinations. With out some kind of corroboration, you have nothing but a PERSONAL opinion. Not only do I have a differing opinion, but I have sighted data that says Paul is wrong. I'm asking you to please verify your statement. Here are some pertinant points in this discussion:
1: Paul Cook says 6.5 rim is stronger- but gives no reason-thicker metal or what ?
2: P.C. claims 'rim protector' indentation is designed to retain split rim to wheel while published data say otherwise.
3: PC shows some pics of the 3 ribs that are there to keep sand and mud out of the rim. He states that on the 9.00 tire they should be inside of the flange, but on the 7.5 tire they should be outside, visible. Which is it Paul?
4: PC and Mike Stone both agree that the 5.5 rim is too small for the 9.00 tire, but PC goes on to state that the 6.5 rim works excellently for the Michelin 11.00x16 tire. What kind of correlation is that?
My view point is that the vast majority or folks running 1/2t trucks are running on 9.00 tires an 5.5 rims, without safety problems. The 9.00 tire IS backward compatible to the previous model, what manufacturor wouldn't do that? Tire/rim combinations have much flexibility, the 5.5-9.00 mismatch is no more hazardous than a 6.6-11.00, and probably safer. You two, PC & MS, are doing a disservice to the owners of these 5.5 wheels by your alarmist opinions.
