I use chains many times a year. I generally chain up the rears first, when the going gets to tough for that or I want to make sure I get through, I then chain up the front too.
From past experience, it is not wise to chain the front only as engine weight etc. causess more traction on the front and axle damage can result. But, chaining up the rears or both axles is fine. Just make sure the chains fit TIGHT!! and you don't drive like a madman and you will find there is virtually NO PLACE that will keep your PW away!! see my foto albums to see my truck with chains on. Yes you can lengthen and or 'fit' chains with no problem, just be sure to install the chains properly, with the smooth side of the end-cross links against the tire! Not the opening side of the end-cross link!! (it will eat into the sidewall) Have fun! Next time, take your chained up PW and show the Ford how it's done!!!
