If I understand you correctly, with the tranny in neutral,eng. running, you press in the clutch and try to engage first gear but the gears grind,correct? If so you most likely need to adjust your clutch linkage as it must not be completely disengaging the clutch or you are not pressing the pedal far enough to completely disengage the clutch.
Even with the slightest touching of the clutch plate to the pressure plate at any point will cause enough engagement to rotate the shaft and gears. Bad on a sync. tranny worse for a non-sync. tranny.
