Engine revival

I need some help with my 251. I got a handcrank for Christmas and tried it tonight on a an engine that's been soaking in ATF. I got the crank around one revolution, but it won't go any farther. I put it in gear and jacked the rear up to try and turn the engine with the wheel, but that didn't work. So am I ready to 'drag it down the road in gear', (the easier, softer way) or should I buckle down and remove the head to do some exploring?
