Need LA motor ID help!

How can you tell the difference between an LA-273, 318, 360, 340, etc?

Are there external clues, or do you have to go by the numbers? If you have to go by the numbers, what are the numbers, and where are they? I get lost when dealing with motors made after 1966!

I have unknown LA motors in a couple of trucks, and I would like to ID them before I list the trucks for sale, or toss the motors in favor of original style motors.
