My '53 FF was converted to 12V and they (FD) used a 2 wire alternator. The alternator has the wide pully so the belt fit. The FF was a Brush Truck and had a siren, emergency flashing lights top, fore, & aft, and radio equipment, so I suspect the reason for the change was the higher current demand(?). From the link below you can see alternators capable of 200 amps, powerfull enough to run your PW and a welder or misc A/C power tools or equipment at low RPMs. It's pricey until you look at the cost of alternatives. I call it "scope creep".
