Alternator vs Generator in flatfender

I have a geral question about the electrical system and my PW. Currently it has been upgraded to a 12 volt system though its not together. I am wondering if it would be advantageous to go with an alternator and new voltage regulator rather than with the old generator. I believe VPW has a kit for this. Can anyone tell me the differences in alternators and generators- which is better etc. It wont be till next yeaar when I need to make a decision. Also what about electronic ignition?
