The M37 frame extension is stepped. It expands ahead of the main frame so it is flush with it. This places the bumper 4-1/2" ahead of the end of the main frame. The rest of the extension narrows to slip inside the main frame. The total length of the extension is 11" along its bottom rail, and 9" along the upper rail.
The problem with trying to make an extension is the step.
Two alternatives:
One of my spare M37's has home made frame extensions welded on by a military depot. They used heavy angle, cut and welded into a C-channel. This was done to get the correct height. It passes all but close examination once the welds are dressed and all the holes are drilled.
Another alternative is to see if AB Linn has any more frame extensions left. I ordered an NOS set from him a few months ago. In fact, AB Linn has a set on ePay right now for a bid of $60 and Buy It Now for $70.
