WELDING TO FRAME AND AXLE???

I will be welding some 1/4" plates to a frame and perches to an axle tube. What type rod (using standard Lincoln Arc Welder) would be good for these applications? Any recommendations on amp settings? I want to get good penetration/strength but don't want to pop through the axle tube. Thanks for input and opinions.

By-the-way this is a later model Jeep uniframe, not the good stuff like on my M880.
