I think there are quite a # of flatheads left around. They are incredibly durable (not counting the crank!) and simple. Excellent design for someone who needs to be "self-sufficent" out in the field, ie farmers, loggers, all the jobs these trucks and equipment were designed to do.
The V-8 trucks look like they are pretty nice to drive, I dont know as I've never been in one. Don Evans seems to get around the western states in his PG&E truck and it has numerous safety and performance mods, but retains it original charcter also. Very well thought out and clean.
We can debate the answer for a long time, and never get anywhere.
Maby Jung is correct about the duality of man. (Sorry, I dont mean to get philosophical on any other knucklebusting, gearjammers like me!)
We pay big money for a "original" truck, then wish we could go farther, faster, stop better, and so on. I've said it before and I'll say it again... every dollar that is put into a vehicle to modify it, subtract that from the value of the vehicle if it was left alone. I dont understand it, or nessicarily agree but that's just the way it is.
I guess the thing to do is build it the way YOU want it or leave it alone and be happy with it. And the correct police be dammed! In the grand community of power wagons, if everyone had the same thing, it would get pretty booring. When you buy a box of doughnuts at the bakery, you usally get a assortment of differert types. I would'nt want to eat a dozen bismarks, but throw some jelly, raised, a apple fritter or two in there, and now we're talking!
One lesson that I've learned in my short and borrowed time here, is that it's not the destination, but the journey. Be it fast or slow, keep a smile on!
