I bought this 1949 Dodge 1/2 ton pickup last fall that had been sitting outside for around 20 years. I pulled the dipstick and the end that shows the oil was rusted off. That should have told me something. However, the hood was shut and the carburetor was on the engine, along with the air cleaner, and intake/exhaust manifold. It couldn't possibly be that bad I thought. Upon removing the head at home, all of the 6 pistons were corroded - barely anything was left of them ! The pistons were practically all powder. This is no exaggeration. Soon I noticed the oil pan had a couple rust holes on the bottom. The engine oil must have drained out over time. The engine was so rusty inside it was ridiculous. I got the crankshaft out but I had to cut the connecting rods with a torch. Camshaft is also totally seized up and valves and valve springs equally rusty. What an unplesant surprise !!
