That kit is the only way to go and having the necessary tools is very important especially when you have to lock the differential case and use another tool to slide into one of the side gears to rotate the ring gear to check the preload on those bearings. Starting on page 303 of the PIF has the tools needed and most are homemade. The gear lash needs a good magnetic base tool with no slop in the parts holding the dial indicator to get that gear lash right.
TM9-1808B is a very good manual covering the 3rd member for the 3/4 and 1.5 ton trucks which require different bearing preloads for each.
I like to use TM9-8855 for the M601 trucks, plenty of images and it shows the proper gear teeth mesh using Persian blue or red grease if all adjustment were made correctly, it's a more updated manual I think. I believe Dave C. sells the neoprene oil seal to use instead of the leather seal. Thanks Greg!
