Ok, after you set the pinion bearing preload and install the differential case, with bearing and ring gear, you lock the diff case spiders, and spin the case turning the ring/pinion gears to get the total bearing preload for the 3rd member. That includes the pinion preload and diff case bearing preload. As an example on your 6x6, if you followed the M37 manual and set only the pinion preload and didn't consider the diff case bearings, then you're not correct on the amount of total preload for the 6x6, see attached image. When you look at the images in the PIF, you'll see a flat tool that is used to spin the side gear to get the total preload for both the pinion, diff case, and ring gear friction.
