I hope you are still running 6-volt with good original gauges. This is the best way to get accurate readings.
If you still have the original gauges, but have switched to 12-volt, this usually does not work for very long. 12-volts can quickly burn out the tank gauge (sending unit). Even jumping a 6-volt truck battery from a 12-volt battery (yes you can do this) can burn out the tank gauge.
Hopefully it is as simple as the shellac on your float is old and ineffective causing the float to bob up and down rather than "floating" on the top surface of the gasoline.
