Your father was rich. When my father started as an engineer at Boeing just after the war I got a little over $3000/year. I think his first project was on the B52. Going further back, when his father was a young man, he got a job feeding rocks into a rock crusher for a dollar a day, and was proud that he talked the boss into giving him $2/day when he showed that he could do the work of the two men who had previously done the job.
The main reason old trucks and old tools are so much better than the new ones is that they cost a lot more relative to wages back when they were made.
