There are two basic bell housing bolt patterns in the PW.

The first is the bell housing used with the non-synchro transmissions. It's bolt pattern was also used in the Military WC trucks also. It was also used in the M37s.

The second bell housing was used in PW trucks with the NP420 transmissions. Both 230 and 251 engines.

Solutions:

1) Get a M37 420 transmission case and put the internals from yours into it. I did this for 51 PW. This allows you to use your current bell housing. You will also have to switch your center floor hump and passenger side floor to the later PW version that was used with the the NP420 transmission.

2) Get a new bell housing that was used in the later PWs with NP420 transmissions. Then use your current NP420 transmission. You will still need to change the center hum and the passenger side floor to the NP420 style.

My 51 PW has its original non-synchro bell housing with a M37 420 transmission case into which I installed the internals from a 1956 PW NP420. I am using a M37 front only PTO as I have a custom beneath the floor brake master cylinder set up.

You might check for parts with Dave Cirio who advertises on this site. He is a great guy and often has what others don't. He knows probably more than anyone else about these trucks and their parts. He is in Medford OR.
