I'm installing the front bearing retainer on my early ("up-to") type transmission in my '49 Power Wagon.
I could swear I remembered seeing something in one of my manuals, years ago, about using some kind of packing material between the input pinion shaft and the retainer, but I can't find anything about it now. Did I just dream that, or is there some manual out there that recommends the use of a packing material to keep dust out of the front bearing and the transmission as a whole?
If there is no packing material required, then what keeps dust from getting into the transmission through the open bearing retainer? The bearing itself is not a sealed or shielded type. I realized the front of the trans is inside the bellhousing, which is somewhat sealed from the elements, but I think there is still plenty of space for dust and water to get in.
Thanks.
