Living fairly close to the Mississippi River, the land here is eroded from centuries of rain runoff into the small creeks and larger rivers that flow to the Mississippi. So we have a lot of hills and valleys.
Just 9 miles from here is Snowstar Ski Area. Up the river about 2 hours is Chestnut Mountain on the Illinois side and Sundown on the Iowa side. They all have several ski lifts and all the cool Snowcats grooming the slopes. Nothing like what one would find out your way, but fun nonetheless. Most of the time the slopes are hard pack or ice. The snow making machines contribute to this. I have never skied in fresh powder, but I always thought that skiing on hard pack really toughened a guy up. ;^)
