I had never heard of the thin sleeve design on these engines. And I didn't realize they were a Chrysler design.
We had to replace the engine in ours after my step-sister and her husband used the cabin and the Jeep one weekend and threw a rod putting a hole in the block. We don't know for sure, but we always figured they were trying to drive it too fast, as it was in 4-low.
So we loaded the Jeep on a trailer and towed it to El Paso for repair. My dad managed to find a guy who installed a new (or maybe rebuilt) engine for $500. Looking back on it, I figure it was probably a government rebuild engine. In any case, this was around 1988 - 1990, and $500 was a great deal for a new or rebuilt engine, installed.
Around that same time, we also rebuilt the entire brake system, the steering box, rear differential, steering knuckles, transmission, and other things. Years earlier, my dad had replaced the rotted-out floor with 1-inch-thick fiberglass with a hole drilled for drainage, and he sprayed the whole Jeep a baby blue color. I also remember a time when he changed the oil and forgot to put the drain plug back in before filling the oil, and I walked up and noticed the big puddle underneath and pointed it out, right in front of one of his old buddies who was visiting at the cabin for the weekend. My dad was so embarrassed.
