I think a lot of what we might consider as just a noisy transmission from design is due to worn parts. A third member with bad gears will cause a third gear knock, bad universals will do it, a bad TC, and a very worm countershaft and counter gear. I don't know of anyone replacing all internal parts as I did, and when I did the main shaft where third gear slides, it has a slight drag that tightens the gear preventing rattling on the shaft. Not sure everyone knows that except someone that has replaced the shaft and gear with new parts. The after type tranny has been around since 1940 in Dodge 1-1/2 ton trucks and Buses. I talked with one older guy that owned a wrecking yard and he referred to it as the big strong transmission that was used in the PW. I'm not sure if the smaller trans didn't hold up well and that was the reason for a swap, or what. As you see in the video, 3rd gear whines but does rattle or knock. The other issue is that most guys when they rebuild these transmissions just eye ball the parts. I don't about you but .002 is tough to tell without a mic on the parts. So you have the stories and you have a video with a trans with all new internal parts with a NOS trans cover to compare to. As far as I'm concerned if a person mics the parts for wear as they should and replaces those outside of .002, you'll have a good quiet trans along with making sure the shift lever pin is tight and the shift lever groove is not worn. Thanks Clint!
