Good information.
What I was specifically referring to is the tendency for the After-Type transmission to rattle only while under load, and only when in 3rd gear.
Dave Butler and I had a discussion on this subject years ago. He went into great detail about the design differences between the two transmissions. There was some major difference that caused the After-Type to do this as it wore, but not the Up-To-Type. I did not own a truck with an After-Type transmission in it at the time, but I was contemplating replacing my Up-To-Type with an After-Type with a correct PTO that I just happened to have at the time, but had never had any experience with. He talked me out of it because of the 3rd gear rattle and I eventually found a correct PTO for my Up-To-Type.
Since I never did the swap, I don't remember exactly what the design difference was that cause him to not be a big fan of the After-
Type trans. Maybe it was just that parts were getting very hard to find at the time. I do remember that his opinion was that the Up-To-Type was far superior. And, if I am not mistaken, he indicated that the Up-To-Type was actually a newer design and for some reason they reverted back to the older design (After-Type) even though the naming convention would lead one to believe different.
I was lead to believe that the names "Up-To-Type" and "After-Type" did not exist before the switch was made in the Power-Wagon. The first one used by the Power-Wagon was simply "4-speed". And then they brought back the old transmission out of moth balls and called it the "After-Type", and then referred to the 4-speed first used in the Power-Wagons as the "Up-To-Type" so as to make more sense when sourcing parts.
That is the story as I remember it. When I got my '51 in 2000, during my first drive in it I thought, "Wow Dave was right. 3rd gear in this thing is noisy." I have since gotten used to it.
I believe this subject has been discussed in more detail over on the Power Wagon Advertiser Forums.
