I have been using 85W140 in my '47 up-to-type transmission since 1980. And, in my '51 after-type since 2000. Also in all four differentials and both transfer cases. 140 weight is what was recommended on my W-Series dealership lubrication poster for temperatures above 32 degrees. I don't drive them much at high speeds below that temperature, so I never thin it out for winter. I have never had any problems.

The "after-type" transmission is a lot noisier than the "up-to-type", especially in 3rd gear right before you want to shift into 4th. Something about an inferior design but I don't remember exactly what it is. I have never had either transmission apart. If I start to hear a bearing getting bad, or if they get hard to shift, I have always seemed to have a spares available and have swapped out for one in better condition. I did this in the '47 once because of oil leaks and once in a '48 I owned at one time because of a lot of slop in the shifting tower.
