the sound is normal for spur gears, later transmissions use helical cut gears and are inherently quiet. as long as you are in a warm climate with low temps above 10 degrees or so the 85-140 lube will be fine. if lower i would use 80-90, also if you replaced the leather seals with modern ones made of buna or rubber, i suggest a full synthetic oil 85-140 year round it coats better and will reduce noise some.
