All,
I am gearing up for some winter rebuilds of the axles on my 60 WM300. I have to rebuild the knuckles so I was thinking of also rebuilding the differential as I dont know when the last time anyone has touched them and the pinion shaft is really loose / wobbles. A few questions to the group about the differentials:
1) I have experience as a machinist and rebuilt the engine a few years back so is this something pretty straight forward to do? I have the shop manual for the truck so I am reading up on the process. What have been folks experiences with differential rebuilds
2) Any first time rebuilder pit falls I should be aware of?
3) I was thinking of changing to the 4.89 or 4.30 gearing that Vintage sells. I admit that my PW doesnt get in the woods or tow that at all these days but it can get hilly here in New England so I was thinking of the 4.89 gears. Any suggestions?
4) Should I attempt to rebuild the carrier, spider gears, slides, pins etc or send it out ?
All advice is appreciated for sure just trying to come up with a game plan for a January rebuild knowing the parts market these days..
Thanks
Glenn
