I have welded a few hundred frames, never had an issue - but I have not welded commercial vehicle frames for the reason you stated.
sectioned frames, spliced frames, patched frames and and done top and bottom flanges many times.
Commercial and transportation vehicle frames bend a lot when loaded and cycle millions of times over their life span of service - not near the same case with a pick up truck.
With a chrome moly tube frame we have it tossed in an oven for about three hours to cook the frame and prevent hydrogen embrittlement at the welds - tig welding cracks is better than wire feed, but I have used stick, MIG and TIG when I felt the need.
