I've done it on a few trucks. I riveted some cab mounts onto a frame, and fixed some PW front fenders. Just didn't want to use carriage bolts. Just gotta get the rivets red hot and you need some sort of pneuwmatic chisel/hammmer with the right concave tip and another person to hold a backup anvil of some sort on the backside of the rivet. Like you said it's not for the faint of heart but it's doable with some patients and the right cobbled hammer pieces.
