Have you ever done an engine swap? The 4BT, for instance, puts out 300 ft-lb and can be easily modified (without internal mods) to put out 400-500 ft-lb. the problem is gearing. It has a peak hp rpm of only 25-2600, so at least a 5 spd or even a 6spd is desirable, with precise attention to tire size/overdrive gearing/axle ratio. In other words, so rpm at 60-65 mph is 18-2100 rpm in top gear.
Several other diesels will work well as well. Yes, they vibrate more and are noisier.
