You can avoid war-page in welding thin metal two ways:
- Allow a 1/16 gap. For example if torch welding a square patch using steel rod, allow 1/16 on two sides.
- Mig weld a steel washer in place using a piece of brass held behind the hole.
- In either case, apply a heat barrier around the area to be welded - see link.
Bondo works as good as anything to fill holes, sand to a thing layer on each side of the panel.
