fuel pump problems

my m601 with 230 motor came with a napa electric fuel pump..very noisey..I have always used mech pumps on my trucks so I replaced pump with a airtex 587 which I have used before with no problems..put the electric on a switch..I found out that it wont run without the electric..runs for a while then dies..turn on electric and it starts back up???bypassed electric just to make sure but it wont run this way either.tank renewed,new fuel lines but it does have a long rubber hose in the rear that im going to replace with steel line..just cant figure it out..jim
