The 251 engine blocks came in two different flavors, one for by-pass flow oil filtering the other for full flow oil filtering. My 251 in this picture has a diamond shaped platform on the side of the block with extra holes for setting up full flow oil filtering. Although I have mine plumbed up for by-pass flow filtering currently at the moment as shown.

The original full flow filtering system used on these 251s had an aluminum housing that bolted onto the side of the block over that diamond flat spot and then incorporated a metal spin on oil filter on top.
