When a pinion, or a gear, has a different number of teeth than another, one of two things must happen - either the diameter changes or the tooth size changes.
How can one get by with changing out only the gear or the pinion and not both as a matched set? Wouldn't one be creating either interference between the teeth - or too much clearance?
I am with Tim. The parts manuals show different part numbers for both the pinions and gears depending upon weather the truck came with 5.83 or 4.89 gearing.
