I agree, feeding cable back onto a drum is an application where I will not wear gloves. I would rather have a sticker in my hand or a cut from a barb than have a glove get caught and be wound into the drum.
As others have mentioned, feeding from a safe distance gives you and the operator more time to react to a bad situation. Stay alert out there!
