I like to use a drill with a small bit to make a row of holes top to bottom of the nut. This will weaken the nut where you can split it along the row of holes by simply turning it or using a chisel aligned to the row of holes.
If you want to save the stud, dont drill into it. If its a bolt that you can replace, you can drill as deep as you want, even all the way thru.
If needed, you can use a progressively larger drill bit to enlarge and overlap the openings.
Ive found you can get a drill bit into tight areas by using a long drill bit if needed, or a drill bit extension. Bell hanger bit come in lengths up to a foot long or longer.
