My general rule of thumb is to stay away from big trucks entirely...especially if you haven’t got a license to drive one or understand their limitations.
For example, one thing many don’t realize is that coming down from steep passes, large trucks try to stay in the RH lane & stay off the brakes & so they get into a gear they feel will keep them within safe speeds. So when a truck in the RH lane starts closing in on another truck in front of him, he has to move into the LH lane or he’s going to crash into the truck in front of him. Many times, braking isn’t an option. Vehicles only have so much brake until there’s no braking left & so these trucks need to move to the passing lane & if you’re in the way...they’re coming anyway.
The weekend warriors don’t understand the situation & just think the truckers are being rude.
Just give the trucks lots of room & you’ll live longer....it’s pretty simple. If you’re passing a big truck, pay attention not to pass him then pull in front & start listening to your radio while he starts gaining on you coming down the next hill & now you’re forcing him to pull out & pass when he just wants to drive safely in the RH lane & get home without killing anyone.
Remember...99% of all truck drivers have far, far more experience than you do behind the wheel of a vehicle. I find it very rare when there’s an incident between car & truck where the truck driver was at fault.
I mean why would anyone want to follow behind a big truck at any distance? Just safely pass them & steer clear...that’s what me thinks.
